New KCSIE Guidance: Online Checks
The Department for Education recently published an updated version of the Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) guidance, which includes new requirements around online checks for school staff.
These new requirements are aimed at ensuring that schools and educational settings have robust safeguarding procedures in place to protect children and young people from harm. They reflect the increasing use of technology in education and the need to safeguard against online risks.
Under the new guidance, schools and colleges must carry out an appropriate level of online checks on all new staff, including volunteers and agency workers, who will have regular unsupervised access to children. This includes obtaining an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which now includes a check of the Barred List for relevant offences relating to children.
In addition, schools and colleges should ensure that they have effective policies and procedures in place to manage online safety risks. This includes providing staff with regular training on online safety and ensuring that all staff are aware of the signs that a child may be at risk of harm online.
By following the new KCSIE guidance, schools and colleges can ensure that they have the necessary measures in place to safeguard children and young people from online harm. At the same time, they can demonstrate to parents and the wider community that they take safeguarding seriously and are committed to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
